We consider our commitment to the environment to be of the utmost importance. We have been careful to consider all the aspects involved in the creation of our products to insure that they are truly as environmentally responsible as possible. Material sourcing, toxicity of glues and finishes, shipping distances, labor practices, and the reuse of waste materials are just a few of the components that we have taken into account. When you buy a casket from Portland Natural Casket Company, you go a long way in reducing the negative impact of disposition. By opting for a green burial, you respect not only an important life lived, but the lives of future generations. Please consider the following information, as you decide how you would like to honor the memory of your loved one.


Locally sourced and Locally Made
The distance that raw materials and finished products travel is an important consideration when choosing"green" products. Other companies offering eco-friendly caskets may source materials and/or their finished product from mills and factories overseas. Long distance shipping requires fuel. Do these overseas factories and mills operate with environmental and socially responsible oversight? Is the wood harvested in a sustainable manner? All of our products are hand made locally using only locally sourced wood.


Non Toxic and Less Waste
Every year there is a tremendous amount of exotic wood, harsh chemicals, precious metals, and concrete that is buried as a result of conventional burial. Our caskets are constructed of only ponderosa pine with a non-toxic glue and finish. We have carefully researched and selected our glues and finishes for non-toxicity.


Manufacturing Byproducts
The waste that we produce in the making of caskets is always reused.

+ We donate our wood shavings to local 4H students that use them as bedding for their pigs, chickens and various other animals.

+ Our scrap wood is often repurposed in other projects for a near by daycare center.

+ Additional wood scraps and shavings are used to heat the homes of our friends and family.

We are a small, independent, business. This has huge advantages for you as our customer:

+ You can be confident of the quality and consistency of each component of our caskets because we make them ourselves, in house. We have no need or desire to outsource.
